4 Good Reasons To Quit Your Job Without Notice

by | Career Growth

Is it okay to quit your job without notice? If so, what happens when you resign immediately, how do you respectfully quit, and what do you say to your boss?

If you’ve got to the point of wanting to quit your job on the spot, you’re likely not making the decision lightly.

In this article, I discuss whether it’s ever okay to quit your job without providing two weeks’ notice, common reasons you might resign on the spot, and how to depart while remaining respectful.

Is It Okay To Quit Your Job Without Notice?

In an ideal world, you’d provide at least two weeks’ notice when resigning. And if you’re in a specialized, management, or executive role, you’d provide additional heads up.

However, there are some situations where quitting on the spot feels like your only option. Additionally, today’s younger generations are reconsidering the concept of giving several weeks’ notice to their employer, particularly in response to unexpected mass layoffs.

If you’re thinking about quitting your job without notice, consider these facts from a survey of 2,000+ U.S. adults by The Harris Poll on behalf of Express Employment Professionals:

  • 55% of adults provided their former employers with two weeks’ notice.
  • 75% of survey respondents believe there are times when it’s okay to quit a job without giving two weeks’ notice.
  • 23% of Gen Z workers (ages 18-26 at the time of the survey) and 22% of millennials (ages 27-40) didn’t provide their most recent employer with 2 weeks’ notice.
  • 61% of respondents believe two weeks’ notice is a courtesy, while 39% believe it is a requirement.

4 Common Reasons To Quit A Job Without Notice

A top reason you might quit your new job without providing ample notice is that the job turns out to be quite different than what was originally advertised during the interview process. While you can try to stick it out, if you were truly catfished, you might choose to resign immediately and cut your losses.

Another good reason you may decide to quit your current role without providing two weeks’ notice is if you’re in a toxic work environment and must put your mental health first.

Along similar lines, if you have a horrible manager and have exhausted all your options, including speaking to your human resources representative and attempting to switch departments, you might leave without notice to protect your mental health. While it’s your responsibility to communicate your boundaries at work, sometimes your only option is to leave if they’re not being acknowledged and respected.

Speaking of which, if your work is seriously impacting your physical and/or mental health, it might cause you to quit your job without notice. In these situations, you could first look into taking a leave of absence; your exact options are going to depend on the type and length of leave you’re planning to take.

To summarize, here are some of the top reasons you may choose to resign from your job without notice, immediately:

  • Your new job isn’t what you signed up for.
  • You’re in a toxic work environment.
  • You have a horrible manager and have exhausted all your options.
  • Your mental or physical health is in jeopardy.

Good Reasons To Quit Your Job Without Notice

What Happens When You Resign Immediately?

So, what are the consequences if you quit without providing ample notice?

In the United States, many positions are at will. Simply put, you can resign immediately without facing any legal consequences. (Note: There may be exceptions depending on your specific employment agreement or contract.)

Importantly, you’ll want to check your employment agreement, as some forms of compensation, such as equity payouts and retention bonuses, are contingent on your length of employment and/or providing adequate notice.

Moreover, some companies have policies in place requiring them not to rehire employees who quit without adequate notice. An HR leader at a large, publicly traded company, who asked to remain anonymous for this article, shared that their unpublished internal policy is to not rehire employees who quit without providing a minimum of two weeks’ notice.

In the aforementioned survey, 53% of respondents reported that they believe their companies would never rehire an employee who left without providing two weeks’ notice.

In the same survey, 80% of respondents shared that employees who do not provide two weeks’ notice are viewed negatively by their company.

How To Respectfully Quit A Job Without Notice

When possible, it’s best to avoid burning bridges and avoid letting emotions get the best of you when quitting, as the work world is incredibly small, and you never know when you’ll cross paths with someone later in your career.

When you do provide your notice, try to do it in person or via Zoom, when possible, followed by in writing.

Also, if you’re unable to provide a full two weeks’ notice, you might consider whether you want to provide your employer with at least some heads up, even if it’s just a few days, to transition your duties and wrap up loose ends.

What To Say When You Quit Your Job Without Notice

Finally, what exactly do you say when resigning without notice?

Here’s a template letter to serve as inspiration:

Template Email When Resigning Job Without Notice

Dear [Boss’s Name],

I’m writing to notify you that I’m resigning, effectively immediately, from my position with [Company Name].

Thank you for making this a smooth transition.

Best regards,
[Your name]

Note: You do not need to provide a reason for your resignation in your letter. Since your notice will be included in your employment file, it’s best to keep it concise, professional, and free of emotion.

How Do You Explain Why You Left A Job Without Notice?

It depends. Unless an interviewer specifically asks, you don’t need to necessarily volunteer that you left your previous job without giving the standard two weeks’ notice. If asked directly, you can explain that you left on your own terms, then quickly pivot to why you’re excited about the opportunity and what draws you to the new company.
