“Can I Outsource My Job Search?” Answered

by | Finding A Job

“Can I outsource my job search to someone else?” If you’re actively job hunting, the thought of farming out your job search has likely crossed your mind.

Nowadays, you can hire someone for virtually any task you need help with, and since looking for a job can be incredibly stressful, it makes sense to want to outsource it to a professional.

However, you want to proceed with the utmost caution before hiring someone to conduct a job search on your behalf.

Can I Outsource My Job Search?

“Can I hire someone to find me a job?” As a tech career coach, I get asked a variation of this question almost every day. A modern-day job search can be stressful and requires significant time, energy, and effort, so it makes sense to want to outsource the process to a third party.

While you can technically outsource your job hunt, you’ll want to proceed with extreme caution before you hire someone to find a new role for you, because you only get ONE first impression.

Can I Hire A Reverse Recruiter To Find Me A Job?

There are many “reverse recruiters” and “reverse recruiting companies” that advertise comprehensive personal branding suites and customized networking campaigns to job search on your behalf. However, the truth is that many of these firms instead farm out the projects to inexperienced subcontractors and virtual assistants (VAs) making just a few dollars per hour.

Although they sell you on white-glove service, they’ll likely just spam your resume to open jobs you easily can find on your own, and there are no guarantees the roles will even align with your experience or expectations. I recently spoke with a job seeker who used one of these services only to find out that their resume had been submitted for an open role at their own employer. Yikes!

Your job search and your personal brand deserve far better than a haphazard strategy. Plus, a spray-and-pray approach won’t land you a job in the current employment market. Instead, you need a strategic and intentional job search strategy.

Alternatives To Outsourcing Your Job Search

Thankfully, if you want to ramp up your job search, you have several options besides farming it out:

Self-Learn The Latest Job Search Strategies

For starters, job search strategies and best practices have changed dramatically in recent years, so you need to stay up to date on the best ways to find a new role in a digital-first market.

Fortunately, there are a lot of free resources available to get you up to speed on the latest job search trends, tools, and search engines.

Important: You want to ensure you’re reading materials from trusted sources who specialize in your niche and have experience working with leaders of your caliber, not self-proclaimed TikTok “job search experts.”

Work With A Career Coach To Bolster Your Job Search Confidence

While my articles will give you lots of great information, if your background is more complex, you’re considering a career change or pivot, or simply want the job search to be less stressful, you might wish to complement your research with the expertise of a career coach.

A career coach can expedite your job search by providing you with:

  • Clarity as you identify target companies and positions that align with your background, experience, skills, and career goals.
  • Personalized feedback on your resume to improve your application-to-interview rate.
  • Guidance on optimizing your LinkedIn profile to increase inquiries from prospective employers.
  • A customized strategy to prepare for recruiter, hiring manager, and panel interviews.
  • Coaching to negotiate and secure a competitive salary and total compensation package.

Some job seekers who work with a career coach also use websites like Fiverr or Upwork to find virtual assistants (VAs) to support them with the administrative aspects of job searching. While you’ll want to double-check their work product, an extra set of hands can ease some of the administrative burden of looking through job boards and Facebook groups, as well as filling out online applications.

Final Thoughts On Finding Your Next Job

While there are plenty of companies willing to sell you job hunting services, think twice before outsourcing your personal brand and career to someone you found online. If you desire expert help with your job search, consider partnering with a coach who can provide you with individualized guidance throughout your journey.
