IFS Coaching Isn’t What You Think: Separating Myth From Reality

by | Career Growth

Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed coaching is rapidly rising in popularity as a methodology for deepening self-awareness, fostering inner harmony, and enhancing decision-making. Every time I scroll through Instagram, I come across another coach, therapist, or healer offering IFS as a way to purportedly unlock your true potential.

The rapid rise of IFS in coaching and other helping professions has also led to a lot of confusion—and frankly, some myths—about what the approach is truly about.

After completing a training program for coaches through IFS Institute, the only official training provider for coaches wishing to learn about IFS, I wanted to clear up some of the most common misconceptions about IFS-informed coaching. Ready to dive in?

Does Internal Family Systems Focus On How To Deal With Your Family?

When I mention IFS to a client, one of the first reactions I get is, “So, are we going to talk about my family?”

Yes and no. You’re not going to be talking about your parents, siblings, or family history in the traditional sense. Instead, IFS helps you understand your inner family—the many parts of yourself that make up your internal system.

While those parts are often shaped by your upbringing and culture, IFS-informed coaching focuses on you. This includes your inner world, your patterns, and how they influence your work, career, and leadership.

Is IFS Coaching Woo-Woo?

Because IFS coaching can go deep quickly, it sometimes gets labeled as “woo-woo.”

Depending on your definition, it might feel “out there.” After all, you’re exploring inner parts of yourself rather than external goals alone. But let’s be clear: IFS is grounded in literal decades of research demonstrating its profound, transformative impact.

The reality is that IFS is simply a framework. It’s a structured, evidence-informed way to understand how different parts of your personality interact.

If you’re familiar with frameworks like the Myers-Briggs (MBTI), Gallup CliftonStrengths, or the Enneagram, you can think of IFS as a new language to help you better understand your internal landscape.

Is IFS Coaching Only For Religious Or Spiritual People?

Certainly not. IFS coaching is helpful regardless of your spirituality, religion, or lack thereof.

It’s highly applicable in corporate settings, including tech, because it helps you understand your internal decision-making process, manage complex interpersonal dynamics, and lead from a grounded, self-aware place.

Expert tip: It can give you a leg up over other leaders who aren’t as in touch with their inner system. Many of my clients appreciate how IFS enables them to make more confident decisions, navigate tough conversations with more ease, and show up as more consistent, authentic leaders. While some of these leaders draw from spirituality, it’s not a requirement.

Will We Only Do IFS Coaching During My Sessions?

That depends on your coach. Some coaches use a single methodology like IFS exclusively, while others integrate multiple approaches.

Personally, I draw from several evidence-based coaching methodologies and merge them strategically and intuitively depending on each client’s needs and goals.

Ask your coach which methodologies they use and how they decide when to apply them. A good coach will gladly explain their process in your chemistry call (consultation) or first coaching session.

Does IFS Coaching Ignore The Real World?

Absolutely not. While IFS-informed coaching focuses on your inner system, its ultimate goal is to help you take more aligned action in the real world.

Understanding your inner parts allows you to lead, communicate, and make decisions from a more grounded place. In fact, IFS enhances action-taking by aligning outer behavior with inner harmony.

Also, a friendly reminder: your inner world is part of the real world.

Is IFS-Informed Coaching Only For Those With Trauma?

While IFS coaching is trauma-informed, it’s for anyone with an inner world, which means everyone.

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck while trying to make a decision, frustrated by a colleague, or simply curious about yourself, IFS-informed coaching can be helpful.

By exploring the different parts of yourself, you’ll learn to lead from your most grounded, confident Self, whether you’re navigating a promotion, managing a team, or reimagining your next career chapter.

Does IFS Mean I’ll Be Talking To My Inner Child All Session?

Not necessarily. Inner child work can be a helpful and powerful part of IFS for some clients, but it’s only one aspect of a much broader framework. IFS is very nuanced and flexible.

Keep in mind that IFS-informed coaching is invitational, meaning you won’t go somewhere you don’t want to go. That said, your coach may encourage you to step a bit outside your comfort zone when doing so supports your goals.

Is IFS-Informed Coaching Just Therapy?

No. Though IFS-informed coaching can feel very therapeutic, it’s not the same as therapy.

Many of my clients complement our coaching work with meetings with a therapist because the focus and methodologies of the two approaches are different. It’s best to meet with your coach and therapist on different days to avoid overwhelming your system.

Important: The coaching industry is currently unregulated, meaning anyone can claim they’re a coach, regardless of their (lack of) credentials, advanced education, or experience. You must conduct your due diligence to ensure the executive coach you’re considering is truly qualified to support you.

Is IFS Coaching A Cure-All?

Some coaches describe IFS as a cure-all. It’s not.

While the methodology can get very deep and help you address core patterns, be incredibly cautious of anyone who promises it will solve all your problems quickly. Real transformation takes time.

You can’t expect to become a new person overnight. In reality, much of the magic of IFS is in its slow, compassionate process.

Can I Do IFS Work By Myself?

Yes, you can technically do IFS work by yourself. There are many resources, such as The Internal Family Systems Workbook: A Guide to Discover Your Self and Heal Your Parts by Richard C Schwartz, that can support you in gaining exposure to the framework.

That said, you’ll be much more effective and safer if you have the support of a trained professional throughout the journey, especially if you’re uncovering complex emotions or patterns.

You can think of it as being like brushing your teeth. While you can (and should) do it daily, you still need to see a dentist regularly to catch what you might miss on your own. The same goes for your internal system.

Final Thoughts

IFS-informed coaching isn’t about fixing you. It’s about understanding you. When you learn to work with your parts instead of against them, you become more grounded, confident, and self-led in your career and your life.
