7 Expert Steps To Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile For Executive Roles

by | Resumes & LinkedIn

An updated, optimized LinkedIn profile is essential in today’s executive job market. Still, updating your profile as a senior leader can feel tricky. Much of the online advice targets entry- and mid-level professionals, while executives must take a more nuanced, strategic approach.

As a career coach for executives, I regularly partner with leaders on updating and optimizing their LinkedIn profiles, whether it’s because they’re eyeing a promotion or preparing for their next big role.

It’s important to note that optimizing your LinkedIn isn’t a matter of just copying and pasting your resume. LinkedIn is a unique platform with a distinct audience and purpose. Your profile should speak directly to recruiters, executive headhunters, and hiring managers.

Plus, as an executive, many of your achievements probably involve confidential or proprietary information, which means you need to be especially mindful of what you share publicly.

Crafting a compelling executive profile means understanding LinkedIn, sharing a clear and authentic story, and tailoring your content to the right audience. Let’s dive into seven key steps you can take to craft a great profile:

How To Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile For Executive Roles

1. Upload a polished profile photo.

If you want to boost your visibility, engagement, and connection requests, a high-quality profile photo is a must.

According to LinkedIn, profiles with a photo receive up to 21 times more views, 36 times more messages, and 9 times more connection requests.

While a polished profile photo is important for everyone, it’s especially important for executives, since it often forms the first impression of your leadership brand.

Not all profile photos are created equal. AI-generated headshots may be a trending story, but they typically lack authenticity. You want to look like yourself and come off as authentic and genuine.

If possible, invest in a professional headshot. If that’s not an option, ask a friend or colleague to take one using a smartphone (today’s phones make it easier than ever to take a high-quality photo). Ensure you’re well-lit, dressed appropriately, and making eye contact with the camera.

2. Develop a keyword-optimized headline.

Your headline is prime real estate. In addition to playing a major role in how likely you are to appear in searches, it appears directly under your name and follows you throughout the platform, i.e. when you post, comment, or appear in search results.

Too many executive job seekers make the mistake of simply listing their current title and company in their headline, which is a missed opportunity.

Instead, you want to weave in keywords that align with your target role and industry. For instance, if you’re targeting a Head of HR role in EdTech, include phrases like “Head of Human Resources” and “EdTech.” It sounds simple, but this simple practice helps you be found by executive recruiters.

3. Design a banner that reinforces your brand.

Your banner (the wide image at the top of your profile) is another often-overlooked opportunity to communicate your value to employers.

You don’t need to be a graphic designer to create a visually appealing banner. Tools like Canva offer templates that make it easy to create a polished banner that reinforces your leadership story.

What do you include in your banner? I often recommend repurposing language from your headline, as it’s content you’ve already spent time refining and aligning with your brand.

4. Write a compelling bio.

You can think of your bio as your answer to, “Can you tell me about yourself?”

As such, it should be written in the first person (i.e., “I am a chief technology officer with 15+ years of leadership experience at B2B SaaS companies…”) and showcase both your leadership experience and career trajectory.

This is another great place in which to naturally weave in keywords. If you’re openly job searching, you might even write out “TARGET ROLES:” and “TARGET INDUSTRIES:” in order to be found in more searches and help recruiters understand where you’re headed.

If you’re conducting a confidential job search, you’ll want to weave in keywords more subtly throughout your profile.

5. Update your experience section with recruiters in mind.

Your experience section shouldn’t be a copy-and-paste of your resume. Instead, think about what recruiters need to know to reach out, request your resume, and schedule a phone screen.

Your experience section is a balancing act. If you give them too much detail, they may feel like they have enough info to move on without speaking with you. If you give them too little information, you won’t spark their interest.

You want to give just enough detail to showcase your leadership scope, impact, and areas of expertise while leaving room for a recruiter to ask for more.

6. Collect high-impact recommendations.

Recommendations are often overlooked by executives, but they can instantly add credibility and make your profile stand out.

As a senior leader, you want to request recommendations from high-caliber colleagues. Think former bosses, board members, and key movers in your industry, whose kind words would leave a major impact on decision-makers.

A single well-written recommendation can go a long way. For instance, one of my clients received a recommendation from a well-known Fortune 100 CEO, and interviewers regularly bring it up.

Expert tip: Consider repurposing short snippets from your recommendations into your resume to add some personality and credibility.

7. Harness the power of LinkedIn to network.

A well-optimized LinkedIn profile will help recruiters find you, but please don’t stop there.

You can catapult your success by proactively reaching out to recruiters and key decision-makers at your target companies.

I encourage my executive clients to set a weekly or monthly activity goal, such as reaching out to just 3 to 5 people at their target companies. LinkedIn is what you make of it.

Why Is It Important To Optimize A LinkedIn Profile With Keywords?

Using the right keywords throughout your profile helps you appear in search results on both LinkedIn and Google.

In fact, I recently spoke with an executive headhunter who shared that nearly two-thirds of their successfully placed leadership candidates came directly from LinkedIn searches.

If you’re not using the right language in your profile, you risk being nearly invisible to employers.

That said, avoid simply stuffing your profile with buzzwords. Instead, naturally weave keywords into your headline, summary, and Experience section.

How Do I Make My LinkedIn Profile Stand Out As An Executive?

Your profile needs to be more than just a carbon copy of your resume. Use the power of storytelling to communicate your unique value proposition (AKA your fabulousness) and what sets you apart from other senior leaders. Make sure each experience you share directly relates to your target role and industry, rather than simply listing facts and expecting employers to connect the dots.

How Often Should I Update My LinkedIn Profile?

Keep your profile updated with your latest accomplishments and roles, including both full-time and advisory. Aim to refresh your profile every 3 to 6 months or after significant milestones. This is especially important at the executive level, as many roles are filled via LinkedIn, and you want to ensure your profile contains your most current information.

How Often Should Executives Post On LinkedIn?

Contrary to popular advice, you don’t need to be posting daily or even weekly to benefit from LinkedIn. Sharing monthly is sufficient to stay top of mind with your network. Remember that most executive recruiters and headhunters find talent through keyword searches, not through thought leadership posts.

Final Thoughts On Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile As An Executive

If you’re pursuing a leadership role, you’re missing out on countless opportunities if your profile isn’t up to date with your latest role, accomplishments, and relevant keywords.

Moreover, you don’t want to wait for opportunities to come to you. LinkedIn makes it easy to network with professionals at your target companies.
